By now, I hope you realize that your Get Thin For Life™ System is more than a “diet”. At the core of the system is a simple, but sometimes tremendously difficult task.

You have to master yourself.

Overeating is a breakdown of self-control, pure and simple. It might be caused by different things, but the issue is self-control. I’ve never heard of anybody being forced to eat themselves fat. It’s a voluntary activity.

Getting thin and staying thin is all about mastering yourself when it comes to calories. It’s one of the toughest things to do in life, but it’s also one of the most powerful things you can do.

Self-control is the gift you give yourself.

You want to know the best news? When you master yourself when it comes to eating, that spills over into other aspects of your life. Self-control is a character trait. It’s part of who you are, and it influences everything you do.

So all your effort to master yourself when it comes to food will pay you dividends throughout your life. That’s what I call bang for the buck!

But what’s the core of self-control? Deep down, it’s really the principle of deferred gratification. It’s giving up something today, so you can have something better tomorrow.

Want a great life where your health doesn’t keep you from being who you want to be, and doing what you want to do? Then practice a little deferred gratification when it comes to food.

I’d love to see you master your weight, instead of being controlled by it. I’m convinced you can do it by mastering yourself. It’s worth the effort.

When it comes to weight loss, Americans generally are cursed by their jobs.

Sure, you have construction workers who move around all day, and probaly burn tons of calories that way. But most folks get more exercise walking to the shower in the morning than they do at work.

They climb out of bed, sit in their cars on the way to work, sit at their desks all day, sit in their cars on the way home, sit down to eat, sit on the couch to relax, and climb into bed again.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is what you call a sedentary lifestyle, and most Americans live it every single day.

One of the easiest thing for offer workers to do to break that cycle has been around for as long as there have been people. WALK!

When you have the choice, take the stairs. If you work on the sixtieth floor, get off at 55 and walk the rest of the way up.

Walk to lunch instead of taking a cab, or riding with friends. If that means you have to eat at a place closer to work, so be it. This is your health we’re talking about.

Rather than parking yourself in front of the television set at night, go for a walk with your family. Just 15-30 minutes is a great way to start, and it has wonderful health effects.

You won’t lose weight just sitting there. Choose to move when you can. Your body will thank you for it.

My father (he’s a physician, by the way) used to say that’s the only effective diet.

Not really, but he did have a point. Americans (and lots of other folks) don’t have a sweet tooth. They have a fat tooth. For many people, “tastes good” means high-fat, and fat has more calories than anything else we eat.

So in a sense, Dad was right. You do have to limit you intake of things that taste good to you if eating them will make you eat more calories than your body burns. There’s just no way around this fact. A dozen donuts every four hours will make you fat, no matter how much fiber you chase them down with.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t eat anything you enjoy that’s, shall we say, off the diet. You can eat great food, as long as you do what good physicians have been saying for decades: Eat a balanced diet.

One of the best “diets” out there is called the Mediterranean Diet. It’s not really a “diet” at all. It’s more of an approach to eating. It’s big on fruits, vegetables and fiber, and light on red meat and other high-fat stuff. It’s the focal point of the “diet” portion of my Get Thin For Life™ System.

Folks in the Mediterranean region have been eating like this for 2,000 years. They’re generally thin…at least until they start making American fast food a habit.

There’s a lot of truth to what your Mom used to say. You have to eat your veggies. Simple, perhaps, but that’s really what it means to eat healthy. You can eat some meat, and some fat, and some sugar, but if you make a steady diet of that stuff, you’ll balloon.

Eating right isn’t hard, but it does mean embracing deferred gratification. Is being fat for the rest of your life really worth that snack?
